According to the World Federation of Haemophilia’s global survey 2023, there are approximately 200,000 people living with haemophilia—more than 2,000 of whom are in Thailand. Individuals with haemophilia face numerous challenges, including undiagnosed conditions and insufficient access to quality healthcare.
Many patients around the world find it challenging to access suitable footwear or safety equipment essential for their protection, which limits their ability to navigate everyday life like their peers. Consequently, families and children living with the condition often experience a constant sense of anxiety, knowing that even a single step could trigger a potentially life-threatening bleed. This ongoing fear contributes to significant disparities in their ability to lead normal, fulfilling lives.
The EquiStep collaboration, launched a year ago, exemplifies a shared vision among Novo Nordisk, Nanyang, and the Thai Haemophilia Patient Club. This partnership is dedicated to raising awareness of the disease and promoting equitable access to healthcare. The Cocoon shoes, designed by celebrated artist Kru Parn - Somnuek Klangnok (known as Parnarts), symbolise both artistry and our collective commitment to this cause.
Mr Enrico Cañal Bruland, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pharma (Thailand) Ltd., stated, "Novo Nordisk has been driving change in chronic diseases through our research and development, providing effective treatments for patients, but there is more that we can do together with our partners. This is the reason why EquiStep was initiated. Today’s launch may be a small first step in our project, but it represents a giant leap for haemophilia patients in Thailand."
Mr Chakrapol Chandavimol, PhD, Managing Director of Nanyang, added, "EquiStep aligns with Nanyang’s longstanding commitment, as the shoes not only blend artistry with functionality but also carry a powerful message—equitable access to quality products with a contribution to society. Nanyang has been working to promote anti-bullying messages in schools and elsewhere; this project is yet another step in our endeavours to foster a moreunderstanding society for all."
The vision of the Thai Haemophilia Patient Club is equally vital to this initiative. Dr Monthon Suwannuraks, DDS, President of the Thai Haemophilia Patient Club, emphasised, "The delivery of the Cocoon shoes symbolises the public and private commitment to creating greater equitable access to haemophilia treatment. Through initiatives that help strengthen the patient community, we hope to inspire greater understanding and support for people living with haemophilia from society at large."
This year’s event was held to celebrate the inaugural delivery of 1,500 Cocoon shoes to the patient association, with attendees engaging in discussions on creating a more equitable healthcare landscape in Thailand.
